Patti Newton: Matt was a ticking time bomb

30 Aug, 2010 07:17 AM
Matthew Newton's mother Patti says her son was a ticking time bomb and was always going to go off sometime.

Speaking on Nine's A Current Affair in an interview to air tonight, she says his biggest problem is not drugs or alcohol, it’s his mental health.

She says in the days leading up to her son's reported attack on girlfriend Rachel Taylor in Rome, he was calling her from all over the world, told her he'd proposed and then everything went sour.

Australian television legend Bert Newton told the program his son's life had become "a bit of a train wreck" and that he and Patti Newton "should have seen the signs ... but we didn’t".

"A lot of things that have unfolded in recent times, the great majority of those things we’ve learned about them through the media," Bert Newton said.

"People might have had the impression that whatever happened, and whatever was done, we condoned it, and when a situation like this comes along, you don't.

"A lot of people don’t have the experience, but when it concerns your child you say 'well, of course we love him and we support him'.

"I think I made an error in saying that because I do love him and I do support him, but I don't support or condone any of the things that have happened."

Matthew Newton lost his job as host of Seven's The X Factor last week and was admitted to a psychiatric facility.

Ms Taylor accused him of two "unprovoked violent assaults" and has applied for an AVO against him.

His manager Titus Day quit after the allegations emerged.

Mental health or social attitude?

I think Patti and Bert were battling whether to go public but unfortunately they are public people. There are millions of people going through the exact same thing yet only ordinary people are allowed mental illnesses it seems and not those in the public eye. Otherwise it is known as Silver Spoon in the mouth Brat syndrome. I just wish the ignorant ill informed people of mental illness should do a bit more research, or if young and not have children at that age yet hope to god they grow up perfect because this is no longer a perfect world....Hang on a minute, never was. Just more media coverage than ever. Like him when he succeeds and hate him when he goes off the rails. Go Tall Poppy Syndrome. Having said all that, he could well and truly be just a spoilt brat but until we know the whole truth, lets just let them get their lives together. Wish you well.

Mental health issues are complex and devastating. Until you've lived it or know someone who has, you don't have the right to judge. Some mental illnesses are such that the unwell person can not see their behavior as being wrong, they see the world through a brain that skews their thinking so it's very hard for them to believe that they have a problem. The Newton family along with all people and families involved with these illnesses need our unconditional support, not judgement.

Its not Mathew's fault.... If Rachael and Brooke (prior) had done 'what they were told' and 'when they told' and naturally also worshipped little Matty as much as his mother and father do, then none of the violence would have been neccessary.

I speak from experience when I say....Think of the people who have been through the same thing and cannot afford fancy psychiatrists like the Newtons. All people with a mental illness should be treated exactly the same.
