50 years of golf celebrated

01 Sep, 2010 09:46 AM
GREENBUSHES Golf Club celebrated its 50th anniversary with an open day golf event and dinner at the weekend.

The club’s last surviving, founding member, Dave Tindale, travelled to Greenbushes for the occasion as did other past players and members.

The day’s emphasis was on fun. Players completed individual rounds before partners were selected in a “lucky dip” format to decide the overall winners of various categories on the day.

The event was won by Rob Taylor and Wally Hornby on 77 points with runners-up Gary Harman and Mike Withers on 69 points.

Greenbushes Golf Club president Dave Malatzky said a highlight was the attendance of Mr Tindale, who survived other founding members Bert Lindsay, Norm Morris and Martin Noteboom.

“In 1959 this group had a dream to build a golf club on the old showgrounds outside Greenbushes and they raised £400 by selling jarrah trees on the premises and used those funds to clear the fairways and build nine sand greens,” Mr Malatzky said .

“I am sure when they first started that if they realised the amount of work, commitment and funds required to keep the club alive this may have never started,” said Mr Malatzky.

Mr Tindale, who was Greenbushes Road Board secretary during his time in the town, presented a glass bowl to the club which he said he hoped would become a perpetual trophy.

“It’s been an overwhelming day for me to return to Greenbushes, it’s a remarkable place,” he said.

“I still remember we did very well in Greenbushes because we had Bridgetown in the swamp down the hill and the cold nights in Balingup down the other side, but there was never even any frost up here,” said Mr Tindale.

The Greenbushes Golf Club now has more than 80 members including junior players and Mr Malatzky said the club prided itself on providing a warm and friendly atmosphere and low membership fees.

“The committee would like to thank all the people over the past 50 years, including the current dedicated volunteers, who have helped to build it into the great club it is today.”
