Roo’s legs “shot off”: police

A KANGAROO was left to suffer after having its legs shot off outside Kirup.

Donnybrook Police received a phone call about 8pm July 31 from a professional roo shooter.

He reported three men in a ute were firing into paddocks in the Claymore-Ravenscliffe Road area, said Senior Constable Becky Breedveld said.

The landowner had asked the roo shooter to be there that night.

While doing his job, he heard bullets fly overhead and into the tree behind him.

“The man jumped into his car and saw three men coming towards him,” Senior Constable Breedveld said.

“As soon as they saw him they turned the spotlight off and he let them know they were not supposed to be there

“The man drove on and approximately 50 metres down the road saw movement in the paddock.

“He saw a kangaroo in the paddock with its legs shot off, trying to get away.

“He had to put her down, along with her joey, which was bruised from trying to get away.”

The man called police and gave them the registration number of the car carrying the three men.

Police saw the car on their way to the scene, and seized three firearms.

Police are pursuing inquiries with a 31-year-old from Carey Park, a 43-year-old from Dalyellup and a 21-year-old from Bunbury.

A licence is required to shoot kangaroos, along with a TAFE course and professional test.

I hope once they have confirmed and charged the culprits that they will publish their names! What weaklings to unnecessarily hurt the roo and her joey!

All to make them feel what? Strong and powerful?

What a joke!! These people are an absolute waste of our oxygen.

This is simply disgusting, horrific and so sadistic!

Why do we humans breed such evil and violent people?

The problem is that kangaroos are, officially, "over abundant" and called a "pest" in their own country.

Some four million are "managed" each year, and any joeys are bashed to death!

Violence towards kangaroos and other native animals seems to be inherent in our culture, nurtured from Colonial era ignorance.

Such cruelty is simply saddening, maddening and indicative of lack of understanding and empathy with animals.
