Blackwood fox shoot date is set

5/03/2009 8:38:00 AM
THE Blackwood fox shoot (but shooters will also be taking aim at other feral species) is on again for 2009.

It will begin on Friday, March 20. Registered teams can shoot from 7pm Friday through until 7am Sunday, March 22.

The Blackwood Basin Group is working with the Department of Agriculture, Blackwood Valley Landcare in Bridge-town, the Blackwood Land for Wildlife Officer and Boyup Brook Pistol Club to tackle the destructive feral species.

This shoot is part of the highly successful Red Card for the Red Fox program, a coordinated effort across the south-west to control fox populations.

After the shoot there will be a barbecue breakfast with tally, weigh-in and prize presentation on the Sunday from 7am at the Boyup Brook Pistol Club. Breakfast will be provided by the Pistol Club members.

“Last year about 30 shooters from Boyup Brook and Bridgetown got involved, bagging 39 foxes, one cat and six rabbits,” said Nerilee Boshammer at the Blackwood Basin Group.“We are hoping that this year will be even better.

“If you haven’t been involved before, this is a great opportunity to raise money for a vital community service and to strike a blow for the agriculture industry and our native fauna species, which are under constant pressure from introduced pests. Plus the Pistol Club guys do a pretty mean breakfast!”

All participants must register their shooting teams by noon Friday, March 20, to be involved. Foxes and cats shot by unregistered teams or outside the specified dates will not be included in the tally on Sunday, March 22.

Contact Nerilee Boshammer or Alicia Goitia at the Blackwood Basin Group on 9765 1555 to register your shooting team, or for more information.

March is the month to get stuck into fox baiting as part of Red Card for the Red Fox program. All baits bought by Boyup Brook and Bridgetown-Greenbushes Shire residents through Boyup Brook Farm Supplies, Boyup Co-op and Bridgetown Richfeeds during March will be subsidised by 50 cents.

If your property is within 20km of the Perup Ecology Centre, contact Jeremy Purdy at the Warren NRM on 9771 8180 about further 1080 bait subsidies.
