Brigade at risk of closing down

02 Feb, 2012 01:39 PM
THE North Nannup Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade is in desperate need of volunteers and has appealed to locals for help.

The brigade’s critical position was highlighted after the brigade’s recent meeting and all property owners in the area were sent an email appealing for help.

Brigade secretary Ashley Kidd said the email said the North Nannup Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade was in critical need of new members prepared to commit to an active involvement in an operational role fighting fires or any other position.

“Recent efforts have resulted in an increase in numbers however, without a further significant increase we run a very real risk of being forced into a close down our brigade or amalgamation with another brigade,” Mr Kidd said.

Mr Kidd said the brigade had been advised the fire tanker truck based in North Nannup could be removed to another area, leaving properties exposed to longer response times, or not being able to be defended at all resulting in loss in the event of a fire.

“The North Nannup brigade area is more exposed than some other brigade areas, both physically and circumstantially,” he said.

“The area is physically exposed because of the close proximity of forest to a large percentage of properties and circumstantially exposed as a result of the 47 per cent of properties owned by non-residents.”

Those who are able to become actively involved in the brigade are asked to email secretary Ashley Kidd at Ashley_NthNannupVBFB@westnet.com. au.
