THE clouds were angry and the occasional gust of freezing rain swept into the amphitheatre, but none of it dampened the festive atmosphere at this year’s Donnybrook Food and Wine Fest.
Crowds flocked to the annual event on Saturday to sample a wide variety of local produce.
A permanent crowd milled along the row of wine-tasting tents, proving the popularity of local wines with locals and tourists alike.
On the other side of the grounds could be found every manner of handmade produce, from raw chocolate to corsets to gourmet jams, preserves, sauces and meats.
The vintage car display was a big hit with visitors to the festival.
Locals and visiting car enthusiasts showed off restored and immaculately kept vehicles that included trucks built without doors, classics like the Chevrolet and a gleaming Humber.
The highlights of the festival were the grape-stomping competition, the waiters’ race and cooking demonstrations by My Kitchen Rules contestants Daniela Pirone and Stefania Muscara.
The grape-stomping competition was embraced by contestants aged from very young to retirees and required people to stomp barefoot in a barrelful of grapes for two minutes at a time to see who could produce the most juice.
There was plenty of laughter among participants at the squelching that followed and the juice that went flying around them.
Daniela and Stefania proved a big hit with an enthusiastic crowd.
They made pasta and two sauces and kept the audience entertained with fiery arguments while cooking with local ingredients.
They conducted two cooking demonstrations and in between the waiters’ race attracted a big crowd of spectators.
