THE caravan park was filled by Westside Caravan Club members and other accommodation was fully booked for the 2010 Nannup Flower and Garden Festival. There were lots of day trippers and several buses brought in visitors.
Local business reported brisk trade, the weather was kind with not too much rain to dampen the enthusiasm of people who came from near and far.
The town hall display reflected the talent to be found in Nannup and the volunteers who worked so hard to bring it all together.
The many displays all followed the Myths and Legends theme, with Ned Kelly, the Bunyip, Lady of the Lake, the Waugyl, the Sword in the Stone, Greek goddess flora, hobbit house, fairies, gnomes, Phoenix, mermaids and dragons and dudgeons all appearing.
The mythical creature created by Ripe Art artist Bridget Waters was the central piece made from old plough pieces, papier mache, rice, grapefruit and oranges.
Voting for the best decorated thylacine was difficult. Some very creative entries were received.
Nannup’s young people were very much involved. The festival displayed lots of wonderful coloured pictures and creations from Nannup District High School.
The Clicking the Culture photographic exhibition attracted lots of entries and the final pictures are sure to make the 2011 calendar a collector’s item.
Hard working craftswomen produced a colourful display and gifts for sale in Community House.
The quilt to which they all contribute — for their yearly raffle to raise money for cancer research — was a delight.
Historical society members were kept busy by visitors viewing the pictorial history of Nannup in the old roads board building.
Ulysses Motorcycle Club mermbers paraded down the main street on Saturday and the Nannup Tiger (on the lead bike) turned a few heads. On Sunday, vintage car fanciers put on a great display — they and the market stalls created a real festival atmosphere.
The Holberry House Sculpture Walk, featuring some impressive art pieces from South West artists, was officially opened on the Saturday morning by Roslyn Happ. The Happs Winery director and a passionate advocate of South West arts and said: “I see the arts involved in everything we do well, from creating a beautiful vegie garden to managing a family or business or, as we have here, works of art which express beauty or meaningful events.” Mrs Happ, who is also a member of the Voices of the Vasse choir which had sang just before the opening, thanked all the people behind the artists — the committee, friends and partners who encourage and support their creativity.
The many choirs, male and female, treated the audience to a wonderful selection of traditional, modern and up-tempo songs, all sang without accompaniment in a capella style.
Some comedy was added to the mix when the Ball Point Penguins took to the stage and had the audience rocking with laughter.
Singing was also on the menu at Loose Goose on Saturday night when the Nannup Music Club put on Sing with your Supper, featuring young local talented musician Franca Dobbin and special guests the Ball Point Penguins. Honey the resident goat even made an appearance to see what all the fun was about,
