Re-formed group seeks pictures from past
BRIDGETOWN Scout Group is celebrating the first anniversary of its reopening on October 31 last year.
As part of the celebrations, Group Scout Leader Lisa Gibson is inviting people to come forward with photos and memorabilia of the local scout group’s past.
“Over time we would like to copy and record the information and so create a unique insight into the history of the local scouting movement,” she said.
The group committee and many other volunteers have been busy working on fund-raising to provide and manage the group’s resources.
Recent fund-raising activities have included a quiz night, sausage sizzle, a wood raffle and an evening of dancing. Funds from these activities and some Government grants will be used to buy camping equipment and to subsidise some of the scouts going to the 2010 Sydney Jamboree
The group’s youngest section, the Joey Scouts recently met up with Joeys from Gooseberry Hill, Midland, and Busselton for a “Best Buddies Sleepover” at the Scout Association Training Camp, Mandejal.
Organisers reported all the youngsters who attended had great fun caring and sharing while learning more about themselves, others and nature.
The cub scout section has been focusing its attention on bushcraft, learning to survive in bush areas.
Programs have been conducted in navigation, finding water in the bush and purifying it, making campfires and cooking safely.
The cub scouts recently put their new skills into practice when they camped at Sunnyside Reserve, participating in craft exercises and cooking their own breakfast, lunch and tea.
The young people who make up the scout section are concentrating on making sure the Jamboree nominees are ready to go, developing their leadership skills with the patrol system and undertaking community work through the recent tree planting and revegetation project and undertaking a guided tour around Bridgetown Hospital.
