THE new boardwalk at the Greenbushes Pool is rapidly taking shape thanks to community volunteers who spend Fridays and weekends at the pool working on its construction.
The team comprises farmers, businessmen and retirees, some of whom are members of the Greenbushes Ratepay-ers and Residents Association.
The boardwalk project has been funded with a $123,000 grant under the Royalties for Regions Funding Scheme administered through the South West Development Commission.
The money has been used to buy the materials and most of the labour is being provided as an in-kind donation by the community.
An eight-metre gazebo has just been constructed at the pool to provide extra facilities for picnics and parties. This was also funded through grants to the Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes with work carried out by local contractor John Szolkowski. Seating and a gas barbecue will be installed in the gazebo over the next few months.
Greenbushes Ratepayers and Resid-ents Association spokesman Pat Scallan said the project was already leading to greater community use of the pool. “We have seen increasing numbers of people visiting the pool on weekends during our working bees and I think the improved facilities will increase those numbers,” he said.
“It is a great example of what can be achieved with partnerships between local shires and communities,” Mr Scallan said .
