Retro window display wows judges

17 Jan, 2012 01:47 PM
A 1950s-STYLE window display wowed the judges of a window display contest run by the Donnybrook-Balingup Shire and the Donnybrook-Balingup Chamber of Commerce in December.

Chamber vice-chair Angelo Logiudice said the chamber and the shire partnered up to run the contest in light of the fact there were no Christmas decorations in the main street in December.

“We wanted to involve local businesses and run a competition,” Mr Logiudice said.

Nine businesses between Donnybrook and Balingup entered the contest.

“We chose to go with vouchers as prizes to promote buying local, so all the vouchers put into the prizes were from Donnybrook, Kirup and Balingup businesses,” Mr Logiudice said.

“The chamber’s role is to make sure people are shopping local and spending their money within the shire wherever possible.”

The first prize of $500 worth of vouchers was won by Balingup’s Milly Merseys, who only received notification of the contest two days before the deadline.

Owner Yvonne Williams used decorations from the 1950s to create a display in her shop window, and said many people commented it was like “a 1950s greeting card”.

“It was a great opportunity to utilise what I had,” she said.

Mr Logiudice thanked the shire for its partnership in the contest.

First prize went to Milly Merseys, second prize to the Donnybrook Pharmacy, third Prize to Trigzz and fourth prize to Debb’s Pre-Loved Clothing.
