Bulldogs keep fighting

11 Aug, 2010 09:34 AM
BRIDGETOWN league footballers gave one of their most spirited performances of the season as they took on Deanmill at Bridgetown last Sunday.

It was a top versus bottom fixture but Bridgetown took the game up to their more fancied opponents in an entertaining game.

Final scores were Deanmill 18.14 (122) to Bridgetown 9.7 (61)

Bridgetown was switched on during the opening stanza with Jade Hurrell and Luke Fredricks providing the leadership Bulldogs had lacked in recent encounters. Darren Tassos again worked hard in defence repelling a number of forward sorties by the visitors.

Clinton Best provided a target as the lead-up forward, marking strongly and bringing smaller running players into the game.

Glenn Cahill opened the scoring for the game and the home team rewarding Bulldogs for their hard work with a goal.

Deanmill lifted its rating, providing greater pressure at the fall of the ball earning a goal through Daniel Sarinis.

When Daniel Tamm followed up with another shortly after, it looked as though the Deanmill men had hit their stride and would take control of the game.

Not to be out done, the Dogs hit back with two goals by Best, giving the home team a deserved though unexpected five-point lead at the first break.

Stung into action, Deanmill lifted their rating during the second term . Bridgetown lost the momentum of the first quarter.

Tamm and Daniel Sarinis lead the goal scoring as Tim Ioannou and David Markotis worked their way back into the game across the centreline providing regular and reliable attacking avenues for the Hawks.

Deanmill started to hunt in packs, re-establishing their dominance over the Bulldogs who fell into old habits becoming unaccountable and making unforced errors for which they were punished.

A six goal to one quarter took the Hawks to a 29- point lead into the long break.

Bridgetown again found its spirit and hit back, outscoring its more fancied opponents during the third term. Fredricks continued to run the ball from half-back and Nick Pantou gathered possessions ac-ross the centreline.

Despite having a Rourke Walsh goal immediately answered by the Hawks, the Bulldogs continued to work their way back into the game.

Bridgetown ran harder and was prepared to honour the key forwards’ strong leads. The Dogs outscored their more fancied opponents, five goals to four, with further goals to Lucey, Price and a fine running goal to Dean Tomkinson. They were back to within 21 points at the final break.

Unfortunately for their supporters , the Bulldogs were unable to sustain their efforts in their final home game for the season.

Deanmill took charge during the final quarter, scoring goals at will and running out comfortable winners.

Bridgetown plays its final game of a long season at Manjimup next week.
