United wins at home

Dardanup women downed six-one

BLACKWOOD United’s wom-en’s soccer team chalked up another strong win at the weekend.

The first half was played with some very good teamwork down both wings and through the middle.

This created many chances which were not capitalised on. This allowed the fast Dardanup forwards to break out of defence on a number of occasions, threatening the home goal.

But keeper Sue Engles was up to the task and the score at the main break was two-one in Blackwood’s favour.

The second half was much the same story with Blackwood’s teamwork toward goal being excellent.

Lauren Sinagra stepped up from the juniors for a game and put away a very good goal.

The forwards adjusted to the pace of the game and started to put away their opportunities. The girls eventually ran out worthy winners,

Goal scorers: Lauren Sinagra 1, Kelly Bloxsome 1, Sarah Townsend 2, Robyn Dellasale 2.

Next week’s game is away to Australind, kick-off 9.15am

Training is at Balingup Oval at 5.30pm Thursday.

Men score five-two victory

LOCAL football team Blackwood Un-ited hosted Dardanup in what turned out to be mediaeval-like weather conditions at Balingup oval on Sunday.

The rain came on cue, as the referee blew the first whistle.

In the first round Blackwood narrowly defeated Dardanup and this match initially was shaping up to be another close encounter. But things changed.

Blackwood was propped up by its young players. Scott Maugher, Connor O’Callaghan and Charlie Hawkins supported once-were-young players Nick Vane, Steve Hawkins and David Field.

Blackwood played with the wind in the first half and — thanks to a cracker of a volley from stalwart Stewart Moore — took the lead.

Gerry McNally’s and Greg Hales’ movement up front bothered the Dardanup backline. Some direct passing from defence into attack resulted in McNally finding midfielder Field who scored to make it two-nil.

Dardanup certainly had some classy players and could have scored before half-time, but Vane and Steve Hawkins in the centre half, who have developed a telepathic-like understanding this year, mopped up each time.

After the break Dardanup came out firing.

Before you could say “wakey-wakey Blackwood”, the teams were on level terms at two-two.

Soon, after a dubious goal mouth skirmish in which the Dardanup goalkeeper went down injured, McNally bundled it over the line and Blackwood had to hang on to the final whistle.

However there was more to come and in the dying minutes Blackwood scored two more, one from Scott Maugher and a second to McNally to make it five-two.

It was pleasing to see Blackwood United back on the winners’ list after a few poor results in recent weeks.

Next week Blackwood travels to Australind.
