All set for new hockey season

11 Mar, 2010 09:47 AM
DONNYBROOK men’s hockey team, the Razorbacks, are gearing up for the 2010 season with one goal in mind – making a comeback.

The team, which has always struggled for numbers to fill two sides, has lost its A2 side and dropped back to one team for now.

The club is looking for new players.

“We want as many kids as we can get playing, if we could get six 14 year olds out there that would be brilliant,” life member Glen Mountford said yesterday.

“If we could mix that with a couple of experienced players and a good bench and spend this year rebuilding, next year could provide some great results.”

Mr Mountford said a lot of great sportsmen had played for the Donnybrook hockey team over the 70 years it has been in existence.

“We’ve often filled up the numbers with guys from Collie and Bunbury, but we’d like to have a true Donnybrook side,” he said.

Because players need to train on artificial turf, the team has made an agreement with the netball group to lay artificial turf over the end court of the netball area for their training, and are waiting for shire approval before going ahead.

Hockey training started last week, and is held on Thursday nights at Egan Park.

Club president Shane Wishart said if enough children, agened 14 and older attended, there would be some night hockey scratch matches.

Anybody interested in playing men’s hockey can call Shane Wishart on 9731 5386 or Glen Mountford on 9731 8284.
