Classic power on the Blackwood

08 Oct, 2009 09:42 AM
POWERING their way to the finishing line in the recent Blackwood Classic 250 race from Bridgetown to Augusta was boat number 150 crewed by driver Shaun Metcher and deckman Kris Plumb. Competing in the standard class, boat 150 took fifth place in a large field of competitors.

The classic takes place over three days during which the small power boats cover 250 kilometres of hazardous water, twisting and turning all the way from start to finish, with rapids, tee-trees, sunken trees and rocks all adding to the excitement.

Competitors and back-up crews camp over night in designated camp sites on the side of the Blackwood River.

There are two classes, standard and sports class, while all boats are powered by 10hp outboard units.

The classic started in 1977 and is hailed as the world’s longest power dinghy race. It is organised and run by the WA Power Dinghy Racing Club.
