Donnybrook v Greenbushes-Balingup
AFTER sitting out the first round with a bye, reigning premiers Donnybrook Cricket Club started its 2009-10 campaign with a massive 243-run victory over Greenbushes-Balingup at Egan Park on Saturday.
On an overcast and breezy day, the visitors won the toss and chose to field first. Donnybrook opening pair Phil Welsh (17) and Anthony Licciardello started strongly, posting 46 off the first six overs, before Welsh was caught at mid-on off the bowling of Jacob Van Bavel.
Licciardello and Brett Scott (39) then combined in a 111-run partnership for the third wicket, with Licciardello bringing up his half-century in the 23rd over. He was eventually bowled for a well-earned 77 off the bowling of Bill Cavazzi. However there was little respite for the visitors as Gary Pavy (43) and Dave Hutchison (60no) teamed up to boost the score past 250 in a commanding 100-run partnership.
A few quick wickets to Cavazzi completed the allotted overs for Donnybrook, which finished six down for 284 after 45 overs.
Cavazzi (4/33) was the stand-out bowler for Greenbushes-Balingup; Troy Van Dimen was also unlucky to finish wicketless after conceding only 27 from his 10-over spell.
In reply, the Greenbushes-Balingup innings started slowly with opening bowlers Chris Morgan and Brett Scott giving little away. Opener Tosh Thamo (seven) was unlucky to play one on to his stumps off Morgan, while Kai Hicks (two) was cleverly stumped by Richard Licciardello, who was keeping up to the stumps to the medium pace bowling of Scott.
The visitors collapsed shortly after, with Scott capturing another three scalps including Rob Hornum (three) to a magnificent diving slips catch by Gary Pavy. After Jacob Van Bavel fell for a duck, Greenbushes-Balingup was struggling at 9-30.
Last wicket partners Mark Rothery and Paul Hillis eked out another 13 runs as they survived for 10 more overs, before the reintroduction of opening bowler Chris Morgan saw Hillis bowled for two.
Greenbushes-Balingup finished all out for 46 after 24 overs. The best bowlers for Donnybrook were Brett Scott (4/9), Tim Davies (2/8) and Chris Morgan (2/13).
Bridgetown goes one up in local derby
BRIDGETOWN V BOYUP BROOK
IN the other round two match, Bridgetown easily accounted for arch rivals Boyup Brook by 75 runs in the local derby at Bridgetown on Saturday.
After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Bridgetown lost a couple of early wickets but recovered on the back of strong performances by Kim Gardiner (67) and newcomer Ryan Roberts (28).
A middle-order collapse was rescued by a 62-run partnership for the tenth wicket by Ben Nicholson (32) and Hugh Mitchell (27no), before the home side were bowled out for 197 in the 44th over.
The best bowlers for Boyup Brook were Mike Thompson (3/27), Jason Mead (2/14) and Toby Lloyd (2/22).
In reply, Boyup lost four quick wickets on back of an accurate Kim Gardiner, before a middle-order revival by skipper Tristan Mead (65) and Ty Bancroft (19) steadied the innings. However, once both batsmen were dismissed, the Boyup tail provided little resistance and the side were bowled out for 122 in the 32nd over.
Best bowlers for Bridgetown were Kim Gardiner (3/34) and Morgan Price (2/26).
Next weekend, Preston Valley takes on Donnybrook in a replay of last year’s grand final at Egan Park, Greenbushes-Balingup hosts Bridgetown at Green-bushes Oval and Boyup Brook has the bye. For all match reports, scorecards and statistics, visit the DBCA website at www.dc-ca.com.au(.)
