BLACKWOOD United men’s soccer team accounted for Bunbury United 2-1 at Balingup oval in wintry conditions on Sunday.
Blackwood has now begun the second round just as it left the first, with another victory.
The unbeaten streak has stretched to four now and this win, pending other results, should see Blackwood move into second place.
Blackwood essentially played the game in three parts a dominant start, a poor middle (when Bunbury scored and Balingup surely received its monthly rainfall stats in just 20 minutes) and a strong finish.
Strong contributors in the first half were Darren Rowland, Nick Vane and Dennis Muhiga.
As the squalls increased Bunbury took advantage of the wind and scored the first goal.
This set the tone for the remainder of the first half with Blackwood falling apart whilst Bunbury lifted.
The visitors were unlucky, really, not to be two or three up.
Maybe it was the half-time talk, maybe it was the chance to get out of the rain or simply changing ends but something caused Blackwood to wake up and chase this game.
Slippery left midfielder Ian Hulme was rewarded from his composed play when a long shot from far out on the left wing was helped into the net by the keeper.
From here Blackwood dominated possession with all players looking strong.
Midfielder Jordan Engle lifted and begun to deliver quality balls to the forwards.
Worryingly (for both Bunbury and Blackwood) stalwart Steve Hawkins was spotted up in attack
Hawkins as usual held and passed the ball with class.
He did however lack an extra dash of pace (which he tells us he once haD) which kept him from making it onto the ref’s scorecard.
It was goal sneak Dennis Muhiga who found the net with five minutes to go, securing the win for Blackwood United.
