BLACKWOOD United FC held its registration day on the Balingup oval on Saturday in what turned out to be a great event for the club and the sport.
Blackwood’s under-16 team played a scratch match against the South West Phoenix under-16s.
The Phoenix is the SW region’s premier club. It plays in the metropolitan competition in a home and away league set-up.
The Phoenix proved too strong in what was a competitive game.
But the local side Blackwood proved it can mix it with best, with stand-out performances by Scott Mauger, Ben Richards, Liam Quinn and the usual solid punching above their weight games from Liam Ward and Kyle Gorman.
Newcomer Connor O’Callaghan also showed glimpses of what he could be capable of and the whole team will improve greatly as players increase their fitness grows and they start to becomefamilia with one another.
The under-16s’ game was followed by a round robin under-11 carnival with Blackwood hosting teams from Australind, Warnbro and a combined side from within the SW region.
The big crowd saw some great skills on show and club president Steve Hawkins was very pleased with proceedings.
Hawkins said the skill level on display, coupled with the great attitude showed by all players and supporters, was a credit to the sport.
The combined side PK’s select, ran out eventual winners on the day.
The Blackwood club’s registrations will stay open for a few more weeks but it is imperative that players show their intent ASAP to ensure correct team.
