THE 200-kilometre exclusion zone for playing two-up must be lifted, Shadow Minister for Racing and Gaming Mick Murray said last week.
Under current law, permits for two-up games cannot be issued for premises within 200 kilometres of the Burswood Casino unless ministerial approval was sought, the Collie-Preston MLA said.
“The exclusion zone must be reduced to 50km to allow country racing and pacing clubs in Bunbury, Collie, Harvey, Pinjarra, Narrogin, Northam and York to run two-up games on course,” he said.
“The game of two-up has traditionally been associated with the racing industry and it is unfair that regional race clubs inside the 200km zone are unable to obtain a two-up permit while other country clubs outside the zone can.”
Mr Murray said country racing clubs were keen to introduce two-up and the Burswood Casino had indicated it supported the suggestion.
“Racing clubs are eager to use two-up games to raise funds for their club and while regional clubs can do this, metropolitan clubs are restricted by law,” he said.“Burswood Casino agrees that current restrictions are inconsistent.”
