World eight ball champion for Balingup

JASON Twist — who has won 14 world eight ball pool titles — will be showing what he can do at the Balingup Tavern on Saturday, November 21.

Twist, nicknamed Tornado, is touring several major centres in WA for the next three weeks performing a series of eight ball exhibitions.

“The exhibitions will enable eight ball enthusiasts to see a genuine world champion at work,” said Chris Tedbury, who set up the exhibition with the Blackwood Pool Association.

Tedbury, who owns Mandurah-based West Coast Billiards and is a first division player in the Peel region’s pool competition, said the gap between a good club player and a world singles champion was staggering.

When he played Twist in England several years ago he did not get a shot for the first six frames and then Twist demonstrated speed pool.

“In three consecutive frames he potted all 15 balls taking less than 50 seconds per frame,” Tedbury said. “Jason ‘Tor-nado’ Twist plays the game fast and that style of play is very entertaining to watch as no one wants to watch a slow player who takes a minute to make a decision on which ball to take on.

“Jason makes his decision quickly as to which ball to pot and the position required to pot the next ball — that is why his frames last only a couple of minutes.”

Because Twist’s eight ball exhibitions are a social event, “he gives all of the challengers a ‘chance’ after that it’s up to them,” Tedbury said.

“Jason also emphasises that it is a fun night out for all.”

West Coast Billiards has lured Twist to WA because Tedbury and his wife have designed a pool cue they call the Equalizer, which Twist has endorsed.

“Jason has come over to Australia for a working holiday and will be making a series or short videos to display on YouTube promoting various aspects of the business namely the Equalizer pool cue and a 1/78-inch training ball which is the cue ball size used in Australia and the UK.

“All challengers will receive a quality color certificate provided by West Coast Billiards stating on how they challenged the 14-time world champion to put his reputation on the line in one frame of pool and nearly won or won, which ever the case may be.

“They are also invited to have their photo taken with Jason as well.”

Since his last visit to Mandurah in 2007,Twist has added two more world team titles to his resumé, a third European title and a sixth international tour title plus he was runner-up world singles champion in 2008.

In total he has played in 21 world grand finals and he has don two workld singles titles and 12 world team events.

After leaving Mandurah, Twist will have three days in England before flying to Las Vegas to play for the Mosconi Cup.
