THE Blackwood River in Bridgetown provided more thrills and spills than our federal election over the weekend.
The Geegelup Cup and Wild Water State Championships attracted 34 entries — from young slalom enthusiasts trying out long downriver kayaks for the first time, to Avon Descent veterans.
Dave Worthy, a multiple Avon Descent winner, again attracted success by winning the open class of the Wild Water State Championships.

Ben Pope took out the under 18 men’s class, Peter Tomczak was first in the Over-35 men’s and Phil Langley won the open plastic craft class.
Bridgetown’s weather was kind, if chilly, and despite the dry winter there was enough flow to deliver keen and clean racing over the rapids.
The dried-out ground and sunshine made viewing from the riverbank a delight this weekend.
Paddlers tackled teams racing on the Saturday and single kayak races on Sunday, concluding with presentations in the Cidery on Sunday afternoon.
