Tales from the Dug-Out
THE Donnybrook Razorbacks suffered a five-one loss to Boyanup in their July 24 fixture — despite having a full side and a five-man interchange bench.
Boyanup was on the scoreboard early when they converted their first penalty corner and this set the tone of the match.
Donnybrook seemed slow and struggled to get into gear, allowing Boyanup to score two more goals from penalty corners.
Star midfielder Peter Gardiner left the field with a strained hamstring adding to Donnybrook’s woes.
Doug Bignell scored Donnybrook’s only goal from a penalty and the Hogs started to improve until Boyanup tapped in a fourth goal.
The disorganised Razorbacks regrouped at half-time break and started the second half with a much more positive attitude.
Donnybrook’s young guns continue to develop into very good players. Mark Atherton’s pace, Ben Mount-ford’s maturity, Cody Denholm’s quiet determination and Josh Denholm’s ability to find space are a credit to the boys.
A period of play saw all four on the field at the same time, Mark and Josh on the wings, Ben at fullback and Cody at halfback. All four did some great things.
In an enthralling piece of play, Ben tackled cleanly and passed to Mark. He sprinted with the ball into the forward line and passed across the field to Josh who lost his opponent and was unlucky not to score as the ball just missed his out-stretched stick.
Cody Denholm showed some great skills on his first game at halfback with great tackling and a brilliant goal save.
All the usual suspects tried hard to turn the game but unfortunately the Sledgehammer left the field with a back strain and Crusty Chapman copped a sin-binning allowing Boyanup to score a fifth goal despite Kiwi’s desperate goal keeping.
The Hogs missed a late chance to score when Old Mounty drilled a thunderbolt across the face of the goals only to see Chopper and Doug Bignell both swinging wildly at the ball and both missing, summing up the Razorback’s day.
Best players: three votes, Crusty Chapman; two votes, Old Mounty; one vote, Big Don.
Goal: Doug Bignell
Highlight: the young guns’ effort — their parents should be proud.
Lowlights: injuries to Pete and Sledgehammer, very costly.
Classic play: Cody Denholm’s goal save, a chest high shot with heels on the line. Fearless in the face of adversity.
