DONNYBROOK’S women’s hockey team has had two convincing wins in its last two fixtures — a strong lead-up to the finals.
Two weeks ago the women followed in the men’s footsteps when they were convincing winners, drubbing Town-Souths nine- nil.
Felicity Graham was keen for the team to get a goal on the board to hit the 50th goal for the season.
Nicole Clarke at centre forward made short work of that request. She picked off the ball from the first pass and had a goal on the board within the first minute — and a huge smile on the president’s face. Two more goals followed in quick succession, again off Clarke’s stick.
The team continued its domination of the goal scoring half with a further three goals before half-time.
A few position changes in the second half gave the cold and wet backline an opportunity to warm up with a run.
Mary Clarke finished with a hat-trick.
Nicole Clarke added one more to take her tally for the game to four.
Lydia Torrisi and Miranda Wootton scored one each.
Then on Friday night in the last fixture for the season was played against Boyanup.
The Donnybrook women won after a very fiercely contested game, scoring two goals to make a 60-goal total for the season.
The game was intense from the first hit-off.
As with last week, the first goal was scored in record time.
Miranda Wootton carried the ball for some distance, getting around opposition players with great skill and hit truly on goal to take a one-nil lead. It was a beautiful goal.
The high intensity and pressure was maintained for the entire 70 minutes. Donnybrook started strongly and finished the same way. Boyanup gained momentum for a small period in the middle of the game.
Donnybrook’s forwards played sup-erbly. They were ably supported by an equally strong half-back and full-back line.
With the minor premiership in their keeping, it is now up to the Donnybrook girls to take their winning form into the second semi-final on Friday night. They take on Associates and the winner will go straight into the Grand Final.
The game at the Bunbury Hockey Stadium will start at 6.30pm Friday. “Go Donny”.
