Junior sport's star courts cash prize

17 Jan, 2012 02:16 PM
BRIDGETOWN squash star Emma Cornish is one of 11 junior athletes around the state to share in grants totalling $6500 as part of the Local Sporting Champions program.

Individual applicants each received grants of $500 to go towards travel and equipment costs when competing away from home.

The Nationals WA Federal Member for O’Connor Tony Crook said the funding would allow for young sports stars to take their chosen sport to the next level.

“We have some terrific young athletes in regional areas,” Mr Crook said.

“Each of these candidates is already a standout in their field.

“Thanks to the Local Sporting Champions program, these young athletes will have the opportunity to travel and participate in state and national events for their chosen sports.”

Applications for the next round of funding are now open and will close on February 29.
