Power cuts as wild weather hits

Power outages have been reported in workplaces across Perth as strong winds and heavy rain lash the metro region and WA's South West.

A severe weather warning is in place for much of the south-west of the state including Perth with damaging wind gusts of up to 100km/h are predicted.

People have posted updates on social media of power surges in their workplaces across a number of Perth suburbs, causing disruptions to the working day.

Computer systems at Perth Magistrates Court have been knocked out due to a power surge causing delays in many cases.

According to Western Power there has been at least one surge recorded on the electricity network in Perth that lasted for a couple of minutes, affecting a few thousand connections.

Hail has been reported in Wellard, Bunbury and Kwinana this morning and a number of traffic lights have been blacked out according to Main Roads WA.

Bickley in the Shire of Kalamunda has already experienced wind gusts of up to 96km/h.

Perth has so far received about 4.4 millimetres of rain since 9am, with many outer suburbs recording higher rainfalls such as Champion Lakes, where 13.6 millimetres of rain has fallen in the same period.

The public viewing area at Perth Airport has also been closed due to the bad weather.

Warning for sheep farmers

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a warning to sheep farmers that cold temperatures, showers and westerly winds are expected during Tuesday.

The bureau says areas likely to be affected include the Lower West, Central Wheatbelt, Great Southern, South East Coastal, South Coastal and South West forecast districts and parts of the Central West forecast district.

There is a high risk of losses of lambs and sheep exposed to these conditions.

Marine wind warnings in place today

The bureau has also issued gale warnings for: Perth Local Waters, Geraldton Coast, Lancelin Coast, Perth Coast, Bunbury Geographe Coast, Leeuwin Coast and Albany Coast.

Strong wind warnings have been issued for: Melville Waters, Pilbara Coast West, Ningaloo Coast, Gascoyne Coast and Esperance Coast.

Marine wind warnings in place Wednesday

The severe weather is expected to continue and the bureau has issues warnings for gales on Wednesday in: Perth Local Waters, Lancelin Coast, Perth Coast, Bunbury Geographe Coast, Leeuwin Coast, Albany Coast, Esperance Coast and Eucla Coast.

Strong wind warnings are in place for the following areas on Wednesday: Melville Waters, Pilbara Coast West, Ningaloo Coast, Gascoyne Coast and Geraldton Coast.
