DONNYBROOK St John Ambulance stalwart John Thomson was last week recognised for his 50 years service.
Ambulance volunteers, community and family members and St John chief executive Tony Ahern gathered at the Donnybrook sub centre.
St John chairman Larry Morgan spoke at the event, saying Mr Thomson began with organisation in 1959-60 as a first-aider.
"Back then they would grab anybody who was handy to have them drive the ambulance and head out to the job," he said.
"John went on to complete his training and then worked as a volunteer for many years serving the local and surrounding communities.
"John later became a First Aid trainer, sub centre trainer and joined the committee in 1963. He took on the role of chairman in 1990 and stayed in this role for 20 years."
Mr Morgan said Mr Thomson had been instrumental in building up the service and had always been cool under pressure.
Mr Thomson's late wife Edith had supported him in his role and been an active St John member.
Mr Thomson had not wanted recognition for his services, Mr Morgan said.
"We are glad he did agree to come and allow us the opportunity to acknowledge and thank him."
