OAKWAY Estate Winery in Donnybrook has been named Best Small Cellar Door in the Geographe Wine Region by well-known food and wine magazine Gourmet Traveller Wine as part of their Australia's Best Cellar Door Awards 2014.
The award came as a complete surprise to owners Wayne and Ria Hammond, who were unaware of being observed.
"We have a lot of people come through the cellar door and some ask more questions than others but no one made mention to us that they were from the magazine and considering us for this award," Mrs Hammond said.
"However, we were approached by the magazine to supply some photographs of the cellar and provide basic information for what we thought was a feature on wine cellar doors in WA.
"We were surprised to see we were named Geographe's Best Small Cellar Door in the magazine when it came out last week.
"Mind you, it was a very pleasant surprise."
The award also recognised Capel Vale, Willow Bridge and St Aidan wineries as Star Cellar Door, Best Large Cellar Door and Best Cellar Door with Food respectively.
"We are more than happy to share the limelight with these fellow Geographe wineries," Mrs Hammond said.
