THE Greenbushes branch of the Returned Services League (RSL) is gearing up to host a special Commemoration Service in August in honour of those who served in the Vietnam War.
Vietnam veterans and their families from across the South-West have been invited to attend the event on Sunday August 17 which will include a march along Blackwood Road to the War Memorial for the Commemoration Service with lunch to follow in the District Hall.
Members of the public, particularly people from Greenbushes, Bridgetown and surrounding districts are also welcome to attend.
Returned Services League of Western Australia State President and Vietnam Veteran Graham Edwards will be guest speaker at the Vietnam Veterans South West Chapter Commemoration Service.
The Bunbury Brass Band will lead the march which will commence at the Shamrock Hotel.
Greenbushes RSL Secretary Pat Scallan said the group had been busy repainting the historic RSL hall in preparation for the Commemoration Service.
He said there would be a Sundowner at the RSL Hall on the evening of Saturday August 16 and people were encouraged to come to Greenbushes and stay overnight for the Commemoration Service on Sunday.
“We have extended invitations to RSL branches across the South-West and we are also hoping people in our local community will come along to the Commemoration Service,” Mr Scallan said.
“The event coincides with the Winter Festival Weekend in Greenbushes so there will be plenty of things to do on Friday night, Saturday and Sunday.”
The fall-in for the march will take place at 10:15am on Sunday August 17 near the Shamrock Hotel with the march along Blackwood Road commencing at 10:30am.
The Commemoration Service starts at 11am and is expected to finish at around 12pm when lunch will be served at the District Hall.
Other events on offer during the Greenbushes Winter Weekend Festival include a Line Dance Workshop and Old Time Dance Social on Friday August 15, a High Tea at Tasty Edibles and workshops at the Greenbushes Community Garden, Blue Sky Retreat and Community Resource Centre on Saturday August 16 followed by entertainment and meals at the town’s historic pubs.
