A mystery vandal has caused controversy in Kununurra.
Working under the cover of darkness the vandal has removed a plaque marking a visit by Rolf Harris to the East Kimberley town.
The plaque securely screwed onto a concrete pillar beside a tree Harris had planted in the town's celebrity tree park in the 1980s.
The park is managed by the local shire but the plaque was not removed as a result of any shire decision.
The council was set to vote on a proposal to remove the Harris plaque at a meeting next week - but someone has made the decision for them.
Shire President John Moulden said: "I don't know what has happened except that it was there a week ago and now it has gone. Someone has levered it off the concrete pillar - I couldn't even speculate who might have done it."
Mr Moulden said that next Tuesday shire councillors would be considering an agenda item which calls for the removal of several plaques from the celebrity tree park.
The proposal says that the plaques belonging to Rolf Harris, former Premier Brian Burke and former Governor-General Peter Hollingworth should all be removed.
Harris is serving a jail sentence in England after being convicted of 12 sexual assaults.
Brian Burke served seven months in jail in 1994 for travel expense rorts, and Peter Hollingworth resigned as Governor-General after it was revealed he allowed an Anglican priest he knew to be a paedophile to remain within the ministry when he was the Anglican Archbishop of Brisbane.
