BRIDGETOWN’S Brooke Suiter, 15, decided she wanted to do something to help other people.
“I looked around for a good project, then I came across the Leukaemia Foundation and I decided to raise money for them, so that they could continue their amazing work,” Suiter said.
“I joined up with the Be Brave and Shave program, which is part of the World’s Largest Shave and I have put collection tins around the town in many of the shops. I have got a lot of sponsors who have pledged money once the shave has taken place.
“Before my hair is cut, a couple of my friends are going to make several plaits, so that the hair stays long when it is cut, it is then being sent to the UK where my hair will be made into wigs for little girls who have cancer, and whose hair has fallen out with the effects of chemotherapy treatment,” she said.
Support for Suiter was high and the Bridgetown Cidery was packed when the time arrived for the cutting to start. The main cutters were her friend Jane Dittrich and her uncle Andrew Dobbs, while her mum, Sharon Suiter, had the honour of cutting off her plaits.
“I set myself a target of $1,000, and I am happy to say that I have already passed that figure and more will be coming in as my hair is being cut,” Suiter said.
