BRIDGETOWN teenager Emma Cornish has a new title to add to her collection – she is the 2014 West Australian Under 19 Girls Squash Champion.
Cornish won the title at the Western Australian Junior Squash Championships in Perth in July where she defeated her toughest competitor 3-2.
Cornish, who started playing squash at the age of five years, has maintained a consistent record throughout her career and was ranked Number 1 Under 13 Junior Girl in WA in 2009 and Number 1 Under 15 Junior Girl in 2011 after winning the Championships in her age division in both years.
The talented squash player has enough competition within her own family to spur her on with twin sister Michelle taking out third place in the 2014 WA Junior Squash Championships and often running a close second or third behind her sibling on the squash court.
Brother Tim Cornish is a former WA Squash Champion who coached in Japan last year and is currently undertaking study at University in Western Australia.
The Cornish squash tradition is a direct influence from their father Mike Cornish, a former National and WA Squash coach, who now runs Squash Magic - an inflatable squash court used for skills training with children up to 10 or 12 years of age.
Mr Cornish also maintains a role in coaching squash with his own family and other talented players in WA.
Both Emma and Michelle Cornish are now preparing for the National Squash Championships to be held in Perth in October.
Cornish is training three to four times a week at present to prepare for the titles.
She travels to Manjimup and Bunbury for the training sessions.
Her sister Michelle is recovering from an ankle injury and is also hoping to be fit for the National Championships.
