THE Dons hosted Busselton at VC Mitchell Park on Saturday August 2.
In magnificent spring sunshine the conditions were perfect for fast skillful football and Busselton performed in all three grades.
First up were the Colts. Busselton were too strong from the first bounce and were never behind. The first quarter flattered the Dons as Busselton kicked one goal seven to keep the Dons youngsters in the hunt.
After the break Busso straightened up and delivered a lesson in running footy. The Dons boys fought the game out but against the probable minor premiers were outclassed 22.24-156 to 3.1-19. Best on the day were R. Ralston, J. Chalker, J. Parker and N. Wedderburn. Congratulations to T. O’Farrell on his debut.
The Reserves were next. Up against a very strong Busselton side the Dons were never in the hunt, going down 20.19-139 to 1.3-9. Missing regular players promoted to the League side, the Dons were a poor second. Best on the day were B. Giudici, H. Nuku, T. Howlett and N. Clifford.
The League side were hopeful of a better result after last week’s disappointing performance against Harvey. With several players back in the side, the Dons started aggressively and surprised their fancied opponents with three goals in the first quarter.
Narrowly behind at quarter time and with Coach Smith’s encouraging pep talk the Dons turned with the wind and fell apart. By half time the Dons were a beaten side and Smith could not hide his frustration, giving the boys a good old fashioned spray.
All credit to Busselton who made their superior speed and fitness pay and looked every bit a finals side, running out winners 23.11-149 to 8.6-54.
They used the interchange gates like a revolving door; indeed the entire Busselton bench camped at the interchange hut, not strictly in accordance with protocol.
The visitors used the conditions well and were comfortable winners. Best on the day were S. Parry, J. O’Dine-Khan, C. Beggs and L. Smith.
Next Saturday the Dons travel to Hands oval to take on South Bunbury in what promises to be a massive day for South West football.
The day will include the three grades as usual but between the Reserves and League games Hands will host the East Perth Vs Swan districts WAFL game. The Don recommends all his regular readers not to miss out.
