LOCAL year 10 students are confronted every year with a visceral, graphic experience under the road trauma prevention program.
The students are shown everything that happens in and after a car accident through reconstructions run by local volunteers and emergency services the very same people who deal with accidents when they happen.
This program is a worthwhile initiative run in both Bridgetown and Donnybrook that endeavours to present teenagers on the cusp of going for their driver's license with just how serious a responsibility that license is, and how grave the consequences if something goes wrong.
Locals of both towns know only too well the tragedy and danger of country roads, and the high toll taken on lives through accidents.
These kinds of programs show people who might otherwise never see what happens after an accident, what part the different emergency services play, from extracting accident victims from a car to emergency treatment at hospital.
As we move from winter into spring, and before we know it the busy silly season, it's good for all of us to be mindful of just how dangerous the road can be, and how important it is to pay attention, drive responsibly and get where we're going in one piece.
Stay safe out there this spring and summer.
