DONNYBROOK-Balingup Shire Ranger Bob Jeffreys was named Ranger of the Year at the WA Rangers Association Annual Conference last week.
Ranger Bob, as he is known to most, was recognised for his ethical approach, commitment to the community and for having been a driving force in changing and developing local bush fire brigades during his 19 years as Shire Ranger.
Accepting the award, which was presented at the conference dinner in Perth, Mr Jeffreys said it was both a complete surprise and a ‘great honour’.
“The Ranger’s job is challenging, but when you work with an exceptional community that is full of volunteers and good citizens, it makes the job that much easier,” Mr Jeffreys said.
“If I had my way, every Ranger would get a medal because it’s a difficult job.”
The association’s choice was supported by Shire CEO John Attwood, who said Mr Jeffreys had shown above-average dedication to his position.
“Bob is always prepared to do that little bit more and give up his own time to ensure the best result is achieved not only for the Shire but also for the community,” Mr Attwood said.
He said Mr Jeffreys had ‘worked tirelessly’ with all 12 of the Shire’s volunteer Bush Fire Brigades, volunteering his own time and becoming a trainer so he could better support them.
He had been instrumental in acquiring funding for local brigades to establish buildings to house the vehicles and operations of each brigade.
“His community orientation has allowed him to become well known throughout the Shire to the extent that people are comfortable reporting any issue, knowing they will be dealt with in a professional manner and Bob will go out of his way to resolve a problem. This award is well-deserved,” he said.
The WA Rangers Association’s purpose is to raise the professional working standards of Local Government Law Enforcement Officers and promote community awareness of the role of Rangers.
