Golf
VETERAN golfers converged on the South West early in November to participate in the National Championships, which are hosted by a different state each year.
The South West of WA, aided by the Country Veteran Golfers Association of WA, presented four of its top courses for the event.
Some 450 golfers attended the Championships from across Australia. Many travelled in their caravans and also attended the Albany ANZAC celebrations the previous week.
The event culminated in a sit-down dinner held at the Sanctuary Golf Resort for some 490 guests – the largest dinner seating in the Bunbury area which necessitated extensions to the 19th Hole and the erection of a marquee. The guest of honour was Mr John Castrilli MHR.
Volunteer committee members, directed by Tournament Director Mike Elliott, spent three years preparing for this prestigious event, incorporating experience from other National Championships to make 2014 the best yet.
Among that group of volunteers were Neville and Rhonda Parker from Boyup Brook, who have attended several championships across Australia. Their experience with Boyup Brook Country Music Festival provided them with a wealth of organising ability.
Welcome bags were provided for all guests who spent the week either playing golf or exploring the region.
The flow-on effects for the South West were unlimited.
Sponsors included REGIS Aged Care a national company with a facility in Bunbury, Remax Lighthouse Realty and national insurer APIA.
Only one member of Boyup Brook Golf Club, Jock Aird, participated, enjoying the network of fellowship with golfers from across Australia.
