A GROUP of students from Bridgetown High School have dedicated some of their free time to sewing dresses for girls around the world who need them most.
These dresses go to young girls in poverty, in various countries such as the Philippines, Africa, Cambodia and Vietnam thanks to an organisation called Hope 4 Women International (H4WI).
H4WI has been bringing hope and dignity to women and girls since 2006.
They care about the world's future women, which is why it was decided to try to get every little girl in the world to own at least one dress.
Bridgetown High school textiles teacher Victoria Meyers first heard of the idea when she saw it on Facebook and thought it was a good idea to make some with interested students and some other staff members from the school.
"I saw on Facebook that there was a 'dress a girl around the world program' and thought it would be a great opportunity for some of our high school students to make a dress for some of these girls," Ms Meyers said.
"Many of these girls have never owned a dress before, so it is amazing to think we are making a dress that will be their first ever dress. It is a great opportunity to make these dresses, and our students are excited by the idea of helping people they don't know just for the sake of helping them.
"The dresses have been made with straps attached to make sure that they go to the young girls and are not used by the males or for tying up the goats or pigs, which are often deemed to be more important than women in some countries."
Bridgetown High School student Nikki Van Bavel said it was great to be involved in the project.
"I've been involved with World Vision and the Global Leadership Conference because I think we live in a very selfish society," Miss Van Bavel said. “It is good to help people who can't help themselves."
11 dresses have been made so far, with another five cut out to go. Everyone is very excited and looking forward to having all the dresses finished very soon.
