Cricketers from the Donnybrook-Blackwood Cricket Association wore black armbands and paused for one minute to honour the life of Phillip Hughes at the weekend.
The New South Welshman died last week after a blow to the head from a bouncer. His death has shaken Australia’s cricket community and has seen a great outpouring of support from around the country and indeed the world.
All players were more than happy to oblige and show their respect for the loss of Hughes. Both games were played in high spirits.
The local derby was taken out by Preston Valley, who continue their unbeaten run so far this season.
Wayne Clifford is in white hot form and showed his fine batting qualities with an unbeaten 77.
Clifford held his side together and with some help from the tail, Preston managed to compile a total of 190. Norm Bedford bowled consistently again to snare 3/21.
In reply Donnybrook managed to raise 122 runs before being all out. Bedford was stubborn at the crease contributing 42 from 72 deliveries.
Bedford’s wicket was the last to fall from a brilliant catch at short fine leg by Kris McDonald who also chimed in with two key wickets.
Joel Parker showed a return to his bowling form on a wicket that seemed to be turning. He snared 5/18 as was clearly Prestons best bowler on the day.
In the other fixture Boyup Brook hosted Bridgetown. Bridgetown came out on top in a very low scoring affair.
The Bulldogs were bowled out cheaply for 80 and would have had reason for concern. However an under strength Boyup team were cleaned up for only 57.
Next week’s fixture sees the top two teams facing off with Preston Valley heading to Bridgetown. Donnybrook will host Boyup Brook.
