SENIORS from around the Donnybrook area last week were driven by bus to the picturesque Wellington Dam, at the invitation of the Lions Club of Donnybrook for the annual picnic.
After a tour of Gnomesville en route, the bus pulled into the look-out area for morning tea.
The area chosen for the picnic lunch was located in the old quarry, from which materials had been harvested many years ago to build and construct the first dam wall. Everyone agreed that the transformed and pristine old quarry was a unique and ideal picnic location.
Interestingly just three months earlier and for the second year in a row, the Wellington Dam had overflowed, resulting in hundreds of visitors swarming the area to witness the spectacle of seeing water cascade over the 367 metre long crest of the concrete wall.
At the conclusion of lunch, the next stop was the Collie-Cardiff Returned and Services League Hall for afternoon tea, followed by an inspection of the World War II Leopard tank on display in the grounds.
The annual picnic has been a successful event organised by the lions since the early 1990s.
