ROADWORKS outside St Brigid's Primary School in Bridgetown have been completed just in time for students commencing school.
Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes Executive Manager Works and Services Lindsay Crooks said he was happy to have the road works ready in time.
"This recent work sees the completion of the recommendations contained in a road safety audit undertaken in 2007 and reviewed in 2011 by Main Roads Western Australia, with input from the primary schools, school bus operators, the Shire’s Roadwise committee and Shire Officers," Mr Crooks said.
"The work was completed largely by shire staff, with specialist contractors installing the kerbing, asphalt and line marking."
Initial plans were made to remove the many trees in the middle of the road so as to enable the upgrade to go ahead. But following community feedback, adaptations were made to ensure the trees could remain in place and still allow the necessary changes to be made.
"The trees in the middle of the road have remained following feedback from the community. Our initial plans were changed so as to ensure they could remain in place, and by removing some of the trees, kerbing and verge in front of the St Brigid's church, we were still able to remain within the AustRoads guidelines," Mr Crooks said.
Shire of Bridgetown Greenbushes Acting CEO Elizabeth Dennis said she was very happy with the changes to the street.
"It all just looks fantastic now, it really finishes off the whole road and makes it so much safer for our kids to get to school," Ms Dennis said.
"We have already received positive feedback from some of the parents and teachers, so that is very pleasing."
Mr Crooks said car park users should make themselves aware of the rules associated with driving in and reversing out of this type of parking bay.
"It is important to be aware that you are not allowed to reverse out of this type of parking bay," Mr Crooks said. "This helps ensure the safety of everyone around."
