DONNYBROOK'S Year 7 Cricket team came out on top after a nail biting Grand Final match against Eaton on Saturday.
A wet and stormy Friday night and the forecast of a wet Saturday in Balingup put both teams on edge leading up to the coin toss.
Captain Declan Boston won the toss and elected to put the opposition in to bat first.
Donnybrook demonstrated some tight bowling and kept the team from Eaton to 32 runs for 5 wickets in the first innings.
Wicket takers were Darcy Healy (2 for 6) and Mason Cooper (1 for 11). Rory Beeson (1 for 2) and Declan Boston each took a wicket, with overs still to bowl in the second innings.
Going out to bat in a favourable position Donnybrook lost a couple of quick wickets which could have put them on the back foot.
However, Finn Turnbull managed to crack five balls to the boundary off of the 11 balls he faced and ended up with Donnybrook's top score of 21.
After the first innings Donnybrook had scored 54 runs and lost 4 wickets.
Eaton's second innings saw them put on a further 39 runs, taking their total to 71 runs all out, with Declan Boston (2 for 5) and Elliot Bedford (1 for 13) each taking a wicket.
Mitchell Russell was light on his feet in the field and saved some valuable runs for the team.
Wicket Keeper Finn Turnbull was not only the top run scorer, but also took 4 catches and assisted his younger brother James Turnbull with a run out for the final Eaton wicket.
Elliot Bedford (11) and Tom Anderson (9) then put on the longest batting partnership of 22, which endured the interruption of a change of innings and 2 rain downpours.
The rain kept things interesting in the second innings, taking the players off the field 3 times and reducing the overs to 22.
Eaton showed some excellent bowling, slowing Donnybrook's run rate right down before a couple of boundaries from Elliot Bedford lessened the pressure a little.
However, with only 3 runs to win Bedford was out and Rory Beeson went in to join Ryan Babich for the last over. Rory Beeson (3 n.o.) managed to get Donnybrook over the line with 3 balls to spare and the help of fellow batsman Ryan Babich (0 n.o.) backing up from the other end.
Donnybrook came out the well deserved victors having lost only one game during the 2014/15 season. Coach, Norm Bedford, was very proud of the way the Donnybrook side pulled together in order to win their first premiership and is sure that this success and the great talent in the side bodes well for the future of Donnybrook Junior and Senior Cricket. His thanks go to Glenn Boston and Ben Anderson for assisting him with coaching and for scoring each and every game.
He also acknowledges the support from all of the parents, without who the boys would not be able to play the game they love.
On Friday evening the boys celebrated their fantastic season with presentations of trophies.
The batting award went to Declan Boston, Ryan Babich took out the bowling award and the coaches award was presented to Darcy Healy.
