THE Greenbushes Community Garden group has installed a new garden bed using wire baskets and rocks, which will form an attractive entrance to the garden from the road.
The new garden bed and retaining wall, called a “gabion wall” was funded through a $1363 grant provided by the Shire of Bridgetown-Greenbushes Community Grant Programme.
The funds paid for soil, weed matting, plants and gabion baskets for the garden. Rocks from the local mine were then placed in the baskets to create the wall structure.
Gabion walls are wire structures that can be filled with any kind of rocks to create natural retaining walls and feature garden beds.
Greenbushes Community Garden members held a busy bee in March to prepare the site, install the baskets and rocks and fill the area with soil in preparation for the winter rains when the native plants will be planted.
