AN annual event hosted by the Lions Club of Donnybrook is seen as an excellent opportunity to acknowledge and thank not only club members for their dedication, but also local businesses and identities for their support of this community service organisation.
President Clive Reid described the past year as the busiest to date, following the hosting of the three-day district convention held in Donnybrook last October, when over 200 visitors flooded into the town to enjoy all it had to offer.
“Our members have clocked up hundreds of hours’ community service, raised funds for distribution to worthwhile causes and now have the satisfaction of knowing they have been excellent contributors,” he said. “We have also successfully run the Shire’s recycling service.”
One of the highlights of the celebratory dinner was the presentation of a James D Richardson honour award to a stunned Ian Roberts, for his tireless work in running the recycling programme for the past few years.
Of special significance was the presence of hospitality students from Donnybrook District High School, who practiced their skills in the kitchen and also serving at tables. A very proud school principal – Mr Jamie Milne and wife Kylie – were guests of the club and able to enjoy seeing the students in action.
He said he also enjoyed seeing a member of his staff behind the microphone to explain the purpose of the Year 10 hospitality course – and then seeing her inducted into the Lions Club that evening.
“Mrs Chantelle Wood is to be congratulated for many reasons and not the least that she is happy to lead the way in starting a Leos club in the area,” he said. “I understand Leos are younger lions and she relates well to the students.”
Councillor Angelo Logiudice proposed this year’s toast to Lions Clubs International and congratulated the Lions organisation for providing 98 years of service around the World.
Newly inducted president Darren White said the club would continue to give service to the community and he would actively work to increase membership and ensure everyone enjoyed the meetings.
