TWENTY-five excited students from Bridgetown Primary School participated in the School Sport WA (SSWA) cross country competition in Perth on Friday August 14, as part of a total of 1408 students from around the state.
The students from years 4-6 trained for four months, 3-4 times a week, in the lead up to the event supervised by team coach Trish Davies, Team Manager Tracy Basterfield and Acting School Principal Chris Mott.
The year four students ran a two kilometre course, with the year fives and sixes competing in a 2.5km run.
Stand out performers on the day were year six student Kelsey Fairman, coming in 21st in her race, with a time of 11 minutes, 28 seconds; and year five student Darcy Craven who came 32nd with a time of 10 minutes 44 seconds.
Team coach Trish Davies said she was very proud of all of the students, with most smashing their personal best times during the event.
"All the students were absolutely amazing on the day against very tough competition," Ms Davies said. "There was some outstanding determination and will power that really shone through on the day. I am so proud of them all."
Team manager Tracy Basterfield said it was such a wonderful opportunity for the students to participate in and a great means to encourage a healthy lifestyle amongst the students.
"The weather was perfect for the competition this year and the students all had a fantastic time," Ms Basterfield said. "We all travelled to Perth together the day before the competition, staying in accommodation in the lead up to the big event. It is such a great opportunity for our kids and a great way to encourage health and fitness."
SSWA is an association of school teachers whose principle purpose is to promote, organise and coordinate sporting competitions for students at a local, regional and international level. School staff volunteer their time to ensure students can participate at these events.
