ON arrival at the Boyup Brook Golf Club for the Boyup Brook Open Day, lady golfers from around the South West and Great Southern found themselves in the midst of the Boyup Race Day.
Along with the appearance of Gai Waterhouse and lady jockeys there was a corporate tent, a Bookie and course vet in attendance.
The event was co-ordinated by the Clerk of the Course who sent a field of 65 competitors to their barriers. With names like Archer and Phar Lap, all mounts made a strong start with several coming through to the finish line in fine form. The coveted IGA Boyup Brook /South West Riverstone trophy was keenly sort after and the sponsors were in attendance to witness the run home to the finish line.
Local fillies proved to read the track well and came home as favourites to win the day - Rhonda Parker, 39 points. It was with a photo finish for second place, Lyn Willett pipped Jann Mead and from neighbouring Greenbushes stables, Rebecca Gilmore. The Gross event was won by Eugenia Pearce from an outside stable in Narpanup.
Correct weight was notified after the race, however after a sumptuous High Tea and champagne in the corporate arena, the standard equal to Ascot or Flemington, some jockeys left with a few extra kilos on board!
Another great day for the Boyup Brook Golf track - a long journey over 18 holes with sand and water hazards creating an interesting run home to the finish line. The track was in excellent condition thanks to the course managers.
