THE upcoming Blackwood Valley and WA Boutique Wine Show will highlight the premium wines being produced by smaller wineries and growers across the state, as well as promoting the Blackwood Valley Wine Region.
Now in its 13th year, the show is the showcase event of the region.
Entries are open to local Blackwood Valley producers, as well as Boutique Wineries from across the State who crush less than 250 tonnes of fruit per year. A record 52 wine producers have entered 272 wines this year.
The show continues to grow each year and develop its reputation as the only show in WA specifically catering for the smaller producer, whilst attracting high quality judges who assess the wines to Australian Standards.
The 2015 judging panel will be led by Rod Properjohn, who has received several awards for his contribution to wine education and journalism in Western Australia. He will be assisted by winemakers Jo Perry and Ryan Agiss.
This year’s wines will be judged on the October 15 and 16 at the Bridgetown Gardens Function Centre, followed by the Exhibitors Function and Awards Presentation held at the function centre on Saturday October 17.
This special function is a not-to-miss opportunity for wine-lovers, with the opportunity to meet with the winemakers and judges in a relaxed environment whilst sampling the premium wines entered in the show from across the state.
“We look forward to showcasing the West Australian boutique winemakers that have entered the only show in the State that caters specifically for smaller producers,” Association President Chris Shedley said.
“Wine Show entry numbers continue to grow each year, and we are pleased that 2015 is going to be another record year for entries,” he said.
"Rod Properjohn will also be presenting a workshop on Saturday afternoon discussing the differences in Shiraz grapes within Western Australia and in particular within the Blackwood Region."
The Blackwood Valley region is fast gaining a well-deserved reputation for top class wine and is lucky to be able to host such a great event to help showcase their produce.
In the midst of lush green pastures, rolling hills and towering forests are hidden 50 picturesque vineyards and 19 unique wineries.
With deep gravel duplex soils and strong loams, wines are produced with distinctive fruit driven flavours and aromas. Cabernet and Shiraz varieties grown in the region are characterised by strong fruit flavours with earthy undertones, while fruit and honey flavours denote the white wine varieties being produced.
One of the advantages of visiting smaller, more boutique, wineries like those found in the Blackwood Valley is the sure knowledge that behind every wine is a truly committed and passionate winemaker, who will usually be delighted to talk to you in person about their craft. Their enthusiasm is certainly well reflected in the outstanding quality of local wine.
