THE South West Junior Tennis Pennant season started on the weekend, with all teams playing the first game at the Donnybrook Tennis Club.
50 children participated in the first junior pennants held for a number of years. With the courts looking magnificent, the children set out to put all the skills learned at coaching into practice, each playing in a doubles and a singles rubber.
In a morning of great sportsmanship, wonderful shots, rallies, serves and volleys, the kids all finished smiling and then enjoyed a morning tea supplied by the Club.
The 14U team (Mitchell Brown, Aron Coxall, Hayden Coxall, Henry Delbridge, Tom Graham and Scott Tuia) had a great first win over Bunbury, winning 4-2 rubbers. The 12U team (Joel Brown, Trent Brown, Josh Emmott, Aidan Hutchinson, Tiana Jackson, Jed Torrisi and Euan Tuia) also won over the All Stars with a 4.5 – 1.5 scoreline.
Next Sunday the teams travel to Busselton to build on the great start to the season.
Earlier this month, Tom Graham and Scott Tuia were part of the South West zone team that travelled to Geraldton for the D’Arcy Slater Cup.
This annual event is for 13U players from country zones and is played over four days.
The South West entered three boys teams and two girls teams, with the boys squad winning the overall trophy. Tom and Scott were in the B team which finished fourth out of 15 teams.
The boys also played in the singles competition, with Scott reaching the semi-finals and Tom finishing runner-up in the plate final.
The popularity of tennis continues to grow in Donnybrook off the back an energetic Committee and growing Membership, providing a great opportunity for locals to enjoy country grass court tennis in a friendly, family environment.
The Club is opening its doors to the community encouraging everyone to pick up a racquet and have a hit, and to this end, tennis fans are urged to get down to Donnybrook Tennis Club and make a racquet on Saturday November 14 as part of the national Free Tennis Days campaign.
Those who have never picked up a racquet, and tennis regulars, are invited to head to the club between 1.30pm and 5.30pm to enjoy free activities including Cardio Tennis, Coaching, free play, demo tennis racquets and apparel for sale from SportsPower, prizes and giveaways, a barbecue, Tennis Hotshots and more.
Donnybrook Tennis Club President Nigel Tuia said it would be a great day out for the whole family.
“The Club Tennis Day promises to be a lot of fun, and you don’t need to know how to play tennis to come along and join in. It might just be the start of a new interest and new friendships,” he said.
