BRIDGETOWN youth Luke Millar is proud to have been so successful in his first year as a driver in two Touring Car Clubs.
As a participant with the South West Touring Car Club and the Beverley Car Club, Millar has shown his skills in all levels of the Junior competitions.
Millar, 15, decided to get into racing when one of his friend’s dads offered him an opportunity to have a car at a track last year.
"I decided to get into this type of racing when one of dad's mates offered me a turn to drive his son’s car, so I went for a race in Beverley and we decided it would be good to get into," Millar said.
"We bought a cheap old Hyundai Excel car and made a few stock changes, such as a new driver's seat, adding a harness and some new rally tyres.
"It is a lot of fun. It is racing two cars against the clock on a figure eight race track. It is more about technical driving than speed racing. I race at Bunbury and Beverley tracks, and can usually go a bit faster on the Beverley track.
"You can drive any type of car, such as a small Hyundai like I drive, or other cars such as a V8 commodore."
Millar has surprised everyone, including his parents, with an awesome display of trophies and medals to show his successes for his first year in the competitions.
Proud parents Ken and Daphne Millar said it was a great sport to be involved in and Luke was doing incredibly well in his first year.
"He is amazing," Mrs Millar said. "They rave about Luke and young Mitch from Perth, who are really challenging all the drivers in both the competitions.
"This fits in very nicely with Luke's future plans. He is doing the automotive program at Manjimup High School and hopes to get into an apprenticeship as a mechanic or sparkie very soon."
