THE unseasonal wet weather in the Blackwood catchment area was quite an attraction as the flood waters swilled and swelled their way from the West Arthur Shire through the Boyup Brook and Bridgetown Shires on their way to Augusta.
The Della Vedova property at Moodiarrup, which is surrounded by the Blackwood River on two sides, was inundated with rain and water. On Monday January 15 they received 220mm, Tuesday 110mm and Wednesday a further 30mm so that the low land was completely swamped by water which spilled out over the Boyup Brook West Arthur Road.
“We had more rain over these last few days in January than the whole of 2015,” Lawrie Della Vedova said. “The irony of the situation is that I sent off the cattle we were agisting on Friday because my dams were virtually out of water.”
Lake Towerrining, which was very close to being closed to skiing due to low water levels, went from this predicament to being totally full and running over in just one day.
By Friday the flood waters had reached Boyup Brook, with many crossings going under. The Music Park was flooded, with the waters lapping at the base of the stage. The Australia Day celebrations which were to be held in the Music Park were changed to Sandakan Park.
Many farms around Boyup Brook received a good 80 to 90mm.
