BLACKWOOD United Football Club (BUFC) are firing up for the 2016 soccer season, with their eyes set firmly on topping last year’s second on the ladder result.
Club President Emma Lynas said the BUFC were looking to increase their numbers this year.
Last year, they had 71 juniors and 40 seniors. Women’s ages in the team ranged from 13 into the 50s, and men from 14 into their 50s.
“We’re struggling with retaining people into the seniors,” Lynas said.
“We’re particularly trying to retain people in the 13 to 25 age group. We think it’s great for them to be involved in the club, not just for playing – it’s nice to have them coach junior teams, it’s good for their CVs and leadership skills."
Last year’s men’s team ranked second on the ladder after the finals, in a narrow defeat. The women’s team sat in the middle of their ladder.
“Blackwood has always punched above its weight in terms of numbers,” Lynas said.
“We draw from a smaller population, but we get two teams every year and do quite well against Bunbury, which has a bigger population.”
Training is on Thursday nights at 4.30pm for the juniors and 6pm for the seniors. Registration afternoon will be on Thursday February 11.
