The new $109 million sports complex in Cockburn – which will incorporate the Fremantle Dockers' new training headquarters – finally has a name.
And according to Cockburn councillor Kevin Allen, it's a shocker.
Cockburn council has been grappling with what to call the new sporting facility at Cockburn Central since it polled more than 2000 residents back in February, with the majority voting for the uninspiring name of Cockburn ARC (aquatic and recreation centre) over three other options.
But the name was shelved when a report to council found people thought they were voting for the Dockers' new training HQ and was subsequently put out for more public consultation. The Dockers' facility will be named independently at a later date.
More than 1000 Cockburn residents were polled and, at 52 per cent, again picked Cockburn ARC over Star Centre Cockburn.
Council also voted for the same name at a special meeting on Thursday night.
Councillor Allen said Cockburn ARC was a "shocking name".
"It is a terrible name," he told WAtoday.
"What the brand company took from us for that name, they should give it back."
Councillor Allen, who has been a vocal critic in the past of council pouring millions of ratepayers' money into the sporting complex, said it should've been given a name more in keeping with the location.
"People won't know where it is or what the name means," he said.
"It needed a more definable name because people will end up just referring it to the Dockers' home."
Cockburn Mayor Logan Howlett previously told WAtoday the naming would be a key milestone.
"This facility will become a recognised brand associated with world-class recreation and aquatic amenities," Mr Howlett said.
"It is vital that we involve our community in this important process."
The new venue, in partnership with the Dockers and Curtin University, will include an arena with several indoor and outdoor pools, a water playground, six basketball courts and state of the art gym facilities.
It is expected to be completed in mid-2017.
