Children and youth in the South West are set to benefit from further funding aimed at enabling them to participate in sport and recreation as well as outside nature play, thanks to the a $5 million allocation in the state budget.
Member for South West region, Hon Robyn McSweeney welcomed the news that two of the State government’s popular sporting and recreation programs, Kidsport and Nature Play WA, would continue to be funded.
“These innovative programs have helped thousands of children in and around the South West connect with sport, recreation, nature and play,” Mrs McSweeney said.
“The award-winning Kidsport program helps eligible children aged 5-18 years join a local sport and recreation club such as football, netball, soccer, athletics or karate as well as swimming pool or gymnasium memberships by offering to pay up to $200 a year towards fees.
The number of children and youth that have used the Kidsport funding in the SW region include 1254 from Manjimup, 753 from Nannup, 369 from Bridgetown and Greenbushes and 194 from Boyup Brook.
The Nature Play WA program provides opportunities to encourage children to play outside in nature so as to remind them how good it feels to do the simple things in life such as climb a tree.
